„Exile in Praha“

ist eine Reise in das Prag der 1940er-Jahre – eine Stadt aus Erinnerungen, Schatten und Träumen. Ein Schriftsteller mietet sich ein Atelier, um an seinem neuen Buch zu arbeiten, doch die Vergangenheit lässt sich nicht aussperren. Auf seinen Wegen begegnet er dem surrealistischen Künstler Jindřich Štyrský, dem rätselhaften Franz Kafka, der Legende des jüdischen Golem und dem verrauchten Reduta Jazz Club, in dem Charlie Parker die Nacht zum Klingen bringt. Er wandert durch Zirkuswelten, trifft auf Froschmenschen und auf Roma, die vor der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung geflohen sind. Immer wieder jedoch kehren seine Gedanken zu Amélie zurück – seiner großen Liebe. Sie ist Quelle seiner Inspiration und zugleich sein größtes Hindernis, denn ihre Erinnerung zieht ihn fort von der Gegenwart und hinein in das Unabgeschlossene. Was ihn dabei am tiefsten beunruhigt, ist eine Wahrheit, die sich langsam offenbart: Er selbst ist längst tot.

Zu dieser surrealen Erzählung hat der deutsche Künstler, Musiker und Komponist Alexander Christoph Sterzel eine melancholisch schwebende Musik komponiert. Sie vereint slawische Folklore, Jazz und klassische Motive mit alternativer und experimenteller Rockmusik und schafft einen Klangraum zwischen Traum und Erinnerung. Der Text stammt vom englischen Schriftsteller Michael Paul Hogan, der ihn auch selbst eingesprochen hat. „Exile in Praha“ ist eine wehmütige Liebeserklärung zweier Künstler – eines Engländers und eines Deutschen – an die Stadt Prag. Aus unterschiedlichen Blickwinkeln verweben sie Erinnerung, Verlust und Sehnsucht zu einem poetischen Gesamtkunstwerk.

“Exile in Praha” is a journey into the Prague of the 1940s — a city of memories, shadows, and dreams. A writer rents a studio to work on his new book, yet the past refuses to be shut out. Along his path he encounters the surrealist artist Jindřich Štyrský, the enigmatic Franz Kafka, the Jewish legend of the Golem, and the smoke-filled Reduta Jazz Club, where Charlie Parker turns the night into sound. He drifts through circus worlds, meets frog-men and Roma who have fled National Socialist persecution. Again and again, his thoughts return to Amélie, his great love — at once his source of inspiration and his greatest obstacle, drawing him away from the present and into what remains unresolved. What unsettles him most is a truth that slowly reveals itself: he himself has been dead for years.

For this surreal narrative, the German artist, musician, and composer Alexander Christoph Sterzel has created a beautifully dreamlike and melancholic score. It weaves together Slavic folk traditions, jazz, and classical motifs with elements of alternative and experimental rock, opening a soundscape suspended between memory and reverie. The text was written by the English author Michael Paul Hogan, who also performs the narration himself. “Exile in Praha” is a wistful declaration of love by two artists — one English, one German — to the city of Prague. From their distinct perspectives, they reflect on memory, loss, and longing, intertwining them into a poetic and immersive Masterpiece.
